http://www.greenpeace.org/international/news/poisoning-the-poor-electroni Ghana is the latest place where we have discovered high tech toxic trash causing horrendous pollution. Our analysis of samples taken from two electronic waste (e-waste) scrap yards in Ghana has revealed severe contamination with hazardous chemicals. Aug 9, 2008 - In China it is indeed the same shit, as well as in India and probably also in other African countries. And from the US these exports are not even illegal yet!! Unbelievable that it is still allowed to put so much toxins in electronics..

Aug 9, 2008 - just like any country, this country needs to survive. they have nothing to offer the world( crops, oil, gold etc..) so they have become the sewer of the world. the rest of the worlds dumping ground. it is unfortunate in the direction we are going, this should be outlawed however if it is outlawed, then ghana doesnt survive. decisions, decisions...

Aug 9, 2008 - burning electronics is extremely toxic, these poor peoples
MarcBassoFilms Says:
Aug 9, 2008 - Thats why I think we need a whole new system, where there isn't dependancy on either sides of the fence, so everyone can survive without the pyramid effect (small handful of countries benefiting and the rest in shackles). Things are getting so completely out of control, something needs to be done or we could loose the land we grew up on.
MarcBassoFilms Says:
Aug 9, 2008 - They should pass a law that makes it illegal for these companies to put short lives on their products. But these companies could easily make bio-degratable materials but they wouldn't make as much in profits which again there should be a law to protect our earth from toxicity so we don't have to deal with this crap. Think how awesome earth would be and look if we made everything that worked harmonously with us and earth.
Gammaclipper Says:
Aug 10, 2008 - You obviously don't understand how electronics work. See, certain materials like copper, lead, gold, mercury, cadmium and others are chosen because they are soft, ductile, malleable, and either make good bateries or good electronics. You can't make a good computer that is biodegradable and it would be difficult to make one that would run (nevermind well) without using materials common in the industry. What you lack is a basic understanding of chemistry, physics, and electronic engineering.

Aug 10, 2008 - I once met three Ghanaians in Itaewon, Seoul, and they said they were scrap metal dealers buying old computers in Korea and shipping them back to Ghana. One guy told me he did two shipments a month, of several cargo containers (that's HUGE) of this garbage.
MarcBassoFilms Says:
Aug 12, 2008 - This comment is broke up into 3 parts because i have a lot to say to you. You didn't see my point at all. (you looked over it to try and prove either how you like to judge or how much you know about electronics) but believe it or not ass, you can make a bio-friendly computer, and believe it or not ass, you can make batteries that last forever but how would companies make profits if people only had to buy from them one time? They would plumit as a buisness sooner or later, sure they'd have a
MarcBassoFilms Says:
Aug 12, 2008 - respectful name but companies want profit over respect. A computers and most electronics are MADE to have short lives, so the consumer will either have to pay to get it fixed or to buy another. This is a tipical scheme that has been going on for a long time. Think about it ass, we live in 2008 and things break apart left and right. Don't you think that we should have things that LAST and WORK properly? If you knew your history you'd know that people used to strive to make things LAST.
MarcBassoFilms Says:
Aug 12, 2008 - Materials that are "common" in the industry are only "common" because they are cheap and easy to obtain, not because they work well, which they don't. What you lack is the basic understanding of humanity and it's history. And thanks for the rude comments on my page, that was real cool.
Gammaclipper Says:
Aug 12, 2008 - Don't call me an ass. Computers are not made to have short lives, they get discarded because they become obsolete, software moves on and eventually upgrades aren't worth it. You can't make a battery that will last forever because even the best will after a time fail to hold a charge due to degredation of the battery materials. The materials used do work well; metals work better in circuit boards than wood. Companies are not out to get you, the world just has limits. Don't call me an ass.
Gammaclipper Says:
Aug 12, 2008 - I know, I know. Like I said, they'd be better off if they repeaired the stuff instead of burn it for the metals. No one is forcing this on them and they just don't have the education or equipment to fix what they get. Maybe GP could try raising money for schools and equipment but that would be helping them and GP seems to hate Africa. That's why they protested and tried to block the importation of donated food in Zambia. Fucking hypocrites.

Sep 11, 2008 - Jesus christ, cant people recycle it in correct and proper way? This is not only ruining the health but also the environment. I think manufacturer should recycle their own products and stop dumping e-waste to poor country. if really want to donate, donate new or usable computer / electronic to the ppl in the poor country. We live on the same planet, breahting the same air and drinking the same water. Pls Think Green.

Sep 17, 2008 - If I had the chance to meet the people in this video,I will say to them 'Keep importing the stuff but burn them under control conditions and direct all the fumes into the atmosphere' After all the whole world will suffer, not just Africans. If Europe beleive they are taking advantage of these people, they are wrong...Heavier budgets on greener alternative why Africa Pollutes the Air with Europes Hypocrisy.lol lol lol Ripple effect

Sep 19, 2008 - These vids make me think about a documentary I saw: Manufactured Landscapes. It is quite impressive to see how huge can be a mountain of telephones, or a plain of microchips. You can see some houses built into that crap, and kids playing in it like you played on the grass in your childhood. Really worth watching, after that for sure one will think twice before wasting sth that can be recycled.
