Up and running since June 1999, OLAF is the main organisation protecting the EU's financial interests. The office, based in Brussels, fights fraud, cases of which harm the EU's interests. It also investigates corruption and any other illegal activity inside the institutions of the EU. At the heart of this fight is information: collecting, verifying, and analysing data. This then needs to be passed on to the relevant bodies like the EU institutions, anti-fraud services in the EU and candidate countries as well as economic organisations and people across Europe. This film, produced in collaboration with the members of the anti-fraud communicators' network, shows OLAF at work. Jul 31, 2007 - I stopped watching when it was claimed that "Europeans benefit from efficient European agriculture" - this is so laughable it should not be dignified with a response. The C.A.P. is almost universally acknowledged (bar the French government perhaps) to be woefully inefficient, leading to mass overproduction, and now it's paying farmers to actually produce NOTHING. It also adds at least £20 to an average British family's weekly shopping bill for example.
grayabc1234 Says:
Jul 31, 2007 - Also, how can the EU Commission claim to know be tackling fraud when it's accounts have NEVER been signed off due to fraud. Oh, and I'm sure nobody has forgotten the mass resignation of the Santer Commission due to massive fraud. Also, the current French commissioner, Jacques Barrot has a recent criminal conviction for fraud and was actually banned from holding public office. This OLAF organisation must sit on their hands all day or sleep, because there's still MASSIVE fraud in the EU.

Sep 2, 2007 - So at least they have an effective audit process in place. Unlike, say, Enron. Do you know the areas where the discrepancies were found, BTW?
ukeuwatcher Says:
Sep 2, 2007 - What are you talking about? It's a EU wide police force, not a part of the machinery of governance. Your complaint is equivalent to attacking the Met. police because a govt. minister took a bribe.
ukeuwatcher Says:
Sep 2, 2007 - Efficient in what terms? I'm not sure what you or they mean, TBH. But would you say agriculture is more efficient with fraud or without? Paying to have farmers "produce nothing" is not entirely bad. It's called leaving a field fallow; it improves the fertility of the land, prevents (or at least reduces) the over-production you complain about and reduces energy consumption (for fertilisers, etc).

Sep 9, 2007 - But they so clearly DON'T have an effect audit in process. Why would the EU's accounts remain unsigned for 12 years if they had an effective audit system? Part of OLAF's stated purpose is to investigate fraud within the EU. They have failed in my view. As for Enron, what's your point? Just because they were fraudulent, does that mean the EU should be able to get away with it?
grayabc1234 Says:
Sep 10, 2007 - I would feel totally justified in slating the Met police if they knew fraud was going on in Westminster and did nothing to stop it, just as we still have massive fraud some 12 years after the Santer commission had to resign in disgrace. OLAF claim that they collect information and data and analyse it on fraud involving the EU, in my view they don't do a good job.

Jan 20, 2008 - dear forum users, I would like to inform you that since maastricht 92 the Union has a political character, accept for two chapters: Foreign affeirs and security. Therefore we don't have a common police or millitary force. (The NATO has nothing to do with the EU, in fact the majority of the EU members are not NATO states)

Feb 10, 2008 - If OLAF is so effective, why have EU auditors refused to sign off EU accounts for 11 years?

Apr 28, 2008 - Angela Merkel is the Harbinger of Death... the EU is fast becoming the 4th reich. the parliament has already passed some strange gestapo style laws... German has always had some strange urge to unite europe, first they did it by force now they are doing it through EU... there is no Oversight over the EU parliament thus making them responsible for no one... this is becoming dangerous.

Apr 29, 2008 - Anti fraud policies in the EU. Ha Ha Ha! Thats a funny one. Next thing you will being saying is that people with criminal records are not working in the EU commission.
wardmmi Says:
Jun 19, 2008 - The auditors having not signed off the books is more to do with bad book keeping than fraud. The auditors are only worried about getting the cents to add up. They don't give a dam about wasted money. OLAF are only interest in fraud, they don't give a damm about wasted money. There is no one looking at the effective use of funds in the EU, and ineffective use of funds wastes more than is lost to fraud...

Aug 12, 2008 - Fraud take many forms for example in Mauritius where the authority is persecuting the Customs Commissioner M. Bert Cunningham to force him resign. Mr Cunningham is actually doing a very great job. He stopped many Mafias in Mauritius who tried and still trying to evade the customs rules. The mafias used ICAC (the finance authority investigators)to threaten him. There are Mauritian Office Ministers involved because don't forget about the Mauritian deputees who got caught with drugs in Amsterdam.

Nov 4, 2008 - Man you trully are an idiot. Europe was always united through force in the past and not only by Germany. England tried it, the Roman tried it, hell anyone would like an united Europe. But for the first time in history we have such an empire, created through democracy, peace and a promise of stability.

Jul 14, 2007 - So: sometimes "we" are not well informed, and if we are, it's propaganda! common!! the guy's work very hard to acompplish their task, and they have to face several lobbies!! I think you must give them credit. If they didn't exist, we wouldn't know if the money (funds) would be well spend by the companies, and many frauds would take place.
