If Derek thought of guitar like 90% of the hacks that are out there, he would probably play with a pick and we probably wouldnt have such great music to listen to. It is easier to play slide fingerstyle because you have greater muting capabilties. However, i feel that derek plays with his fingers because it makes an easier connection from brain to guitar. A pick would just get in the way!

Aug 9, 2008 - There are a billion ways it seems to finger pick. Personally I like Tommy Emmanuel. He's about as fast as you can get fingerpicking, although he uses a thumb pick.

Aug 17, 2008 - Mike Mattison. Been with them a while. I don't think he has other work out. The band said they "found" him singing in a subway on the Gibson Green Room video. Very soulful.

Aug 18, 2008 - I just saw Derek at the Burlington, VT waterfront last night, and Mike M had Laringitis, but we decided he didnt need a singer, cause he really rocked all his songs with some amazing solos. And the encore, Key to the highway had Grace Potter as the singer, it was a gr8 show.

Sep 3, 2008 - what eoj115 is trying to say is that many slide players prefer to use their fingers because it allows them to employ a different kind of articulation than when you use a pick.

Sep 8, 2008 - when i saw carlos santana at the UFC arena in orlando i had never heard of derek trucks or the derek trucks band. but when derek opened for carlos that night, he blew my mind. dont play much slide guitar so i cant argue with you guys about wether or not a pick or finger picking is better, but i say who cares? its what way works best for you right? i admire derek and i think ill try to learn some slide :)

Sep 25, 2008 - Articulation is what separates the good players from the great. While Derek is sticking mainly to the pentatonic blues pattern, his articulation makes his melodies much more interesting and creative.

Oct 9, 2008 - I have been playing for about 23 years. Derek is the best slide player I have ever seen hands down. His ability and versatility is unmatched. Vaughan was a better all around player but as far as slide goes, Derek is the best I have ever witnessed. I have watched this young man grow up living here in Florida and he never seems to hit that "wall" we as average guitar players do. He is truely gifted.

Nov 4, 2008 - I agree - his phrasing really transcends into another dimension. Just saw him the other night in Buffalo. I don't think there are really similarities between Vaughan and Trucks to compare them though. Two amazing plays in each of their own rights.
