Now Playing in the YouTube Screening Room: http://youtube.com/ytscreeningroom http://www.nfb.ca/ryan 2005 OSCARS for Best Short Animation Ryan is based on the life of Ryan Larkin, a Canadian animator who, 30 years ago, produced some of the most influential animated films of his time. In the film, we hear the voices of prominent animators and artists discussing Ryan's work, and from waitresses, mission-house caretakers and homeless people who make up Ryan's life. These voices speak through strange, twisted, and disembodied, computer-generated characters--which combine to reflect the film's creator, Chris Landreth. In the words of Anais Nin, "We don't see things as they are. We see things as we are." Some strong language. Viewer discretion is advised.

Oct 9, 2008 - I saw this in my film survey class, and I loved it so much I had to see it again:) I love how little things that represent emotion and things surrounding us are portrayed, like how when we reach out to someone little arms come out of our heads..lol, and when we have addictive substances in our life they call out to us all the time, but we are really defensive about them. (hence why the drink gave Chris the middle finger) tons of tiny metephors in it, and its so creative. I love it!

Oct 29, 2008 - Most amazing use of 3D animation I've ever seen. Even though I want to go into 2D / traditional animation I can imagine this being influential to some of my animations in the future. :D Wonderfully disturbing. :) And it really wasn't that hard to understand for me since most of the visual metaphors are pretty strong (And the narrator was nice enough to explain a few right off the bat). I love that halo.

nyxetera Says:

Oct 29, 2008 - But the only problem is that I'm not familiar with Ryan's life history so the depth of meaning is falling a little bit short. I've seen Walking before but I didn't know that he was ripped off so much.
