Once again a predatory police state society is being created. Police policing everyone now? Searching Everyone will be the norm. What's the purpose for this? Mega income generation from catching everyone who has expired tags and or plates?

Jan 31, 2007 - What I am saying is how can something be classed as "private" when it is open to the "public"? If a member of the public can openly see, and record you (with a video camera for example) then that is fine, right? Tourists often record many streets which have other people on them. Surely this would be the same as your privacy being lost on CCTV camera? What private actions are socially acceptable in public places that you wouldn't like to be recorded?
MrBeatnik Says:
Jan 31, 2007 - Being tracked is not the same as being free. You are still free to do what you want... I don't understand what freedom is lost when there is no privacy available?
crazyphat Says:
Jan 31, 2007 - There is no point discussing this with you. You come from a society where surveillance is accepted as the norm. Stay in the UK and enjoy it - just do not try to pollute our freer societies with your accept form of tyranny. This is about Canada thus comments are regarding Canadian values of freedom.
MrBeatnik Says:
Jan 31, 2007 - I'm asking about Canada - I checked S1a of the canadian rights, it mentions that you should have liberty. What liberties are being removed by a CCTV camera? You can still do ALL the things you are free to do with or without it. If you are "in a public place", there is nothing private about it. Privacy laws surely cannot be infringed, but I'm curious what freedom is lost? I really want to know! I'm presuming nothing is lost, can you say otherwise?

Jan 31, 2007 - BTW, I'm asking for education - lets discuss a topic that people feel differently on - this is the longest thread here :) Hopefully others read and take something back with them too - whether they agree or not!

Feb 1, 2007 - sorry. thought you were taking a p!ss.
MrBeatnik Says:
Feb 1, 2007 - hehe, nope... although on YT I can see why you think that :) Good to have a discussion which is important. That document is interesting, but relates to the "Police installing unauthorized electronic tracking device in accused's car to monitor his whereabouts", which I certainly do NOT agree with. I'll see if I can dig up something that relates directly to "public monitoring" and post here if I can find. Thanks again!
crazyphat Says:
Feb 1, 2007 - whats the difference really? He is driving on public roads and being monitored. The other way is just not physically touching a vehicle but still monitoring him. There are other sites I had that dealt more specifically with CCTV issues and unauthorized license plate inquiries. I'll post them when I dig them up again. cheers.

Feb 1, 2007 - I do not trust the government with this power. Power corrupts. This can be used to maintain a database of the comings and goings of innocent people, which can then be searched to look for illicit behavior. But permission for such searches should only be with a warrent, based on probable cause. Without that, the police are going on a "fishing trip" and this creates a chilling "police state" where people are afraid to go outside.
freesk8 Says:
Feb 1, 2007 - It's fine to say you don't care about YOUR right to privacy, but you have no right to take away MY or anyone elses right to privacy! So go ahead and give it up. One day, they will come for a right that you really do value, but then the rest of us won't be around to come to your aid.
crazyphat Says:
Feb 3, 2007 - Well put freesk8(both your messages)! I think MrBeatnik is honestly looking for info on this. IE: Links to court decisions regarding being surveillances. Its hard to post URLs on YouTube. :-S

May 26, 2007 - 4th Amendment...what is this 4th Amendment crap
freesk8 Says:
May 27, 2007 - 4th Amendment: The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the person or things to be seized.
freesk8 Says:
May 27, 2007 - Where is the warrant for this kind of search? Why is there no probable cause, no description of the place to be searched? Where is the oath or affirmation of evidence of wrongdoing? There is no presumption of privacy in public places, but this technology creates a surveilance state that is no compatible with a free country and a limited constitutional government.

Dec 15, 2008 - in actually it would be under plain view discovery... I still think it's crap.
freesk8 Says:
Dec 15, 2008 - Hmm. You're right. I guess the chilling thing is the idea that by linking all the scans of your license plate, the government could put together a log of your comings and goings all day. This is just more power than the government should have, even if it technically is constitutional. We are really on the verge of living in a surveillance state. We are giving up liberty for a false sense of security. Orwell was right.

Jan 30, 2007 - Just realized you are from the UK. The UK has the most horrid Civil Rights and the most TRACKED society. Why do you think so many people fled England back in the day and set up FREE SOCIETIES. You are still worthless subjects in the UK.
