The newest of my music video/ musical montages, this time staring Micky Dolenz (of the Monkees) to the tune of "Hey Mickey" by Toni Basil. Fitting isn't it? lol! Comments and suggestions are welcome! Thanks! Enjoy! (This video is dedicated to all the MonkeeLanders and Dolenzkaters out there, without whom this video would have never seen the light of day! I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did making it!) *Peace!

Sep 4, 2008 - Of course this video could also have been dedicated to another "Mickey" of rock & Roll--one Michael Phillip Jagger, also known as "Mickey" Jagger. And let's not forget the most famous Mickey of them all--one Mr. Mick E. Mouse. But the latter already had a song written in his honor-- "Who's the leader of the club that's made for you & me?/M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E!"
gymnastix Says:
Sep 4, 2008 - Actually, this song WAS about Micky Dolenz. Originally the song was recorded by the British pop group Racey as "Kitty," but Toni Basil changed the title to "Mickey" when she recorded it in 1979 (three years before it became a hit), as a tribute to a crush she developed on Dolenz when Basil choreographed & acted in The Monkees' film "Head," some 15 years previous. Basil had quite an extensive resume as a dancer-choreographer, actress & even singer, years before she had a hit with "Mickey."
gymnastix Says:
Sep 4, 2008 - By the way, you "CheekeeMonkee," the Toni Basil version of this song (originally titled "Kitty" & recorded by the British group Racey) was titled "Mickey," not "Hey Mickey." But you've done a superb job in editing and syncing this video, really, it's one of the better music videos I've seen here on You Tube!
gymnastix Says:
Sep 4, 2008 - Also, are you by any chance a Mike Myers fan? I remember that "cheeky monkey" line from one of Myers' "Saturday Night Live" skits, "Simon," where the character, sitting in a bathtub while showing his drawings, implored viewers not to stare at his "bum." Apparently that skit was inspired by an actual, British children's TV series, "Simon In The Land Of Chalk Drawings," where the child character would enter (via his backyard fence) the action of his pictures drawn on a magic chalkboard.

Sep 4, 2008 - There's a great parody of this song by "Weird Al" Yankovic, titled "Ricky," a tribute to the classic TV sitcom "I Love Lucy." The best line from the parody is "Oh, Ricky, what a pity, don't you understand/That every day's a rerun, and the laughter's always canned." Of course that's a bit disingenuous, because, unlike most of the TV sitcoms of the 1950's & '60's, "I Love Lucy" WAS actually filmed before a studio audience, so no laugh tracks or "canned laughter," as commonly called.

Sep 4, 2008 - This is a great video tribute to Micky Dolenz, and by creating it, "CheekeeMonkee," you've brought to fruition Basil's intent in doing the song. But Yankovic's version of this song, especially his video, is even more clever & entertaining than Basil's. In fact, I'll bet Yankovic's original video for "Ricky" is even uploaded here on the Tube. I think I'll go have a look-see right now, then report back here for anybody who's interested.
gymnastix Says:
Sep 4, 2008 - Yes, "Weird Al" video of "Ricky" is right here on You Tube, as is the Toni Basil original of "Mickey." It would be great fun to watch the original Toni Basil video, this Micky Dolenz tribute one here, and the "Ricky" video back-to-back-to-back on one's media player of choice! Who knows, maybe even the original original, "Kitty," by Racey, is also uploaded? In which case, add that to your video mix as well.

Sep 17, 2008 - i never knew this b4 now i love the song even more :) The song "Hey Mickey" by Toni Basil in the '80s was about the only "Mickey" she knew--Dolenz. Toni choreographed The Monkees' movie Head (1968) and was in the movie dancing with Davy Jones in the harem scene. She went on to appear in Easy Rider (1969) (which involved Jack Nicholson and Bert Schneider, who were a big part of "Head").

Sep 27, 2008 - Yes Gymnastix, I do happen to be a Mike Myers/comedy/SNL fan and that is originally where the inspirtation for my username came, I just tweaked it a little to fit better my situation. I wish I could drop the numbers at the end of my name though...oh well...thanks.

Sep 27, 2008 - Don't forget, Mickey Mouse was quite possibly named after child actor Mickey Rooney. ;-)
Poopsie25 Says:
Oct 10, 2008 - Micky Rooney was born way after Micky Mouse was created...
futurefan88 Says:
Oct 10, 2008 - Mickey Rooney was born in 1920 and Mickey Mouse was created in 1928. I have no idea if he really was named after Rooney, but I looked it up on Wikipedia and it said the following: "Mr. Disney originally named the character Mortimer Mouse, but his wife insisted that this was a poor name choice. Actor Mickey Rooney has claimed that, during his Mickey McGuire days, he met cartoonist Walt Disney at the Warner Brothers studio, and that Disney was inspired to name Mickey Mouse after him."

Nov 9, 2008 - I've got to say I have no idea who the dude is (was a little before my time) but the song is always a classic. He's pretty easy on the eyes anyways if that is, he were up-to-date on fashion.

Nov 11, 2008 - The drummer and often singer from the Monkees, Micky Dolenz. The story is that it was originally a song about a girl ("Hey Kitty"), but Toni Basil had a crush on Micky Dolenz while she was choreographing their movie, Head, so she changed it up and made it about Micky.
