Aug 4, 2006 - Peteneras is a very sad palo in the flamenco, check out the marked words on this site and find peteneras allmost at the bottom. http://64.233.183.104/search?q=cache:9JW63jrZObIJ:www.centroflamenco.com/history.html+peteneras+history&hl=nl&gl=nl&ct=clnk&cd=1

Aug 4, 2006 - Parvane do you have more fragments from that dvd? I saw this dvd once, but I forgot the name and I know the Alegria came from the same one! If you have the name of the dvd and/or more fragments that would be wonderful :O

Aug 13, 2006 - This should actually by called Peteneras...and it is not a Gypsy favorite...(maybe that whas a joke?)....it is considered very bad luck to dance or sing or play this....but it is my favorite...thanks for posting it!

linglingmama Says:

Aug 13, 2006 - It should be "Peteneras" (not Paternas in Spanish anyways)..there is some question as to the real meaning...but usually is meant to be "song of the woman from Paterna" "La Petenera" was a famous prostitute who really lived and she was killed by a jealous lover. People say she is a ghost now....

Sep 30, 2006 - For all Petenera fans, YES to Linglingmama's comments! My father once performed a Petenera guitar/vocal solo at José Galván's studio in Sevilla and a few Gypsies present left the room until he was finished. Watch out for more Peteneras here on my Youtube channel: youtube/michaelmbrown. A 2-hour DVD dedicated to her is underway!

Elpezquecamina Says:

Nov 14, 2006 - Petenera is not gypsy, the roots are jewish. And it's only singed by non-gypsy (payos) singers.

Jan 28, 2007 - magnifique!

JamesCroak Says:

Feb 5, 2007 - Impressive bit of knowledge. I personally tried to play a Petenera in front of some Gypsys and they refused saying it was too dangerous. They associate it with bad luck. That said the roots of flamenco are so mixed it would be impossible to say a particular song was this or that, generally speaking.

jejoma122 Says:

Feb 12, 2007 - yeah, this song doesn't have the dissonances that are extremely characteristic of gypsy compositions.

Isidoroespinosa Says:

Feb 13, 2007 - El cantaor es JOSÉ MENESE, uno de los mejores artistas del cante flamenco. La Petenera es un cante chico, pero JOSÉ MENESE lo interpreta con gran fuerza por lo que parece un cante grande.

Michaelbee Says:

May 13, 2007 - That's not necessarily true. Many stories about Petenera are contradictory. What about "Paternera", the woman who settled in Paterna de la Ribera and who was claimed to have killed 2 of her lovers? Who knows that she was not a Gypsy. Many many Gypsies happen to have been Jewish or of Jewish origin. Since you're ineterested in Petenera, why don't you have a look at the musicfilmfactor[dot]com website.
