Traditional Latin Catholic Mass: Easter Sunday

Traditional Latin Mass filmed on Easter Sunday in 1941 at Our Lady of Sorrows church in Chicago. The film presents the ceremonies of the Missa Solemnis or Solemn High Mass in full detail with narration by then-Mgr. Fulton J. Sheen. Celebrated by Rev. J. R. Keane of the Order of Servites (hence the white habits and cowls), the ceremonies are accompanied by a full polyphonic choir, orchestra, and fifty Gregorian Chanters. The attention to detail in the ceremonies is impressive. Notice, for example, how the servers and ministers always take great care to move in order. Notice too that the servers are all almost identical in height. The Ordinary of the Mass, composed by Rev. Edwin V. Hoover, while pleasant in places, is very much a reflection of its time. The Proper on the other hand is timeless and sung admirably by a healthy throng of Seminarians from Mundelein, Illinois. Unfortunately due to size restrictions at Youtube around 20 mins have been cut from the original, however, I hope to upload a full version somewhere soon. In addition to the cuts I have added new captions and edited the opening credits which had deteriorated in the original. Other than this the film remains largely unchanged. Apologies for the error in the captions for the two parts of the Mass (software). The first part is of couse the Mass of the Catechumens, the second is the Mass of the Faithful.

Nov 6, 2008 - The culture that built our western society is slipping away. Nature abhors a vacuum. It will be replaced - is being replaced - by another one. I for one am sorrowful about it.

Nov 6, 2008 - One of Obama's main objective is stem cell research........It just came out today as a agenda....The Blessed Mother is right...The road we are traveling on is not good...We MUST look to the cross to get through it....Time is running short....A Great Chastisement from God is coming...

Nov 8, 2008 - This mass only dates back to the 1500's and its traditions perhaps to 1000. Thank God for Vatican II, so that people can understand what is being said. Jesus didn't speak in Latin and didn't look away from the people gathered around him. Thank God for a new understanding of the Liturgy.

dontwanto Says:

Nov 8, 2008 - You are quite wrong about Our Lord speaking in Latin. Although his native language was Aramaic, he did indeed speak Latin, as we can deduce from his conversation with Pontious Pilate as recorded in Matthew Ch. 27, Mark Ch. 15, Luke Ch. 23, and John Ch. 18. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass was established on Holy Thursday by the Second Person, Himself. It is so sad that those who attend the post V-II Mass which was concocted by Judas-bishops do not understand this.

Nov 8, 2008 - wavertree, We have options. Government can only do so much, even if it does allow abortion, it must be remembered that it too is a business. Now we must address the sexual crisis preverting our people. Once we start teaching about the effects of fornication, we will be able to cause this evil to go out of business, maybe even for good. What do you think?

nwside7725 Says:

Nov 9, 2008 - Yeah, salvation from Jesus was meant to be esoteric and distanced from the people. I am sure a Royal Roman court proceeding is EXACTLY what Jesus had in mind for table fellowship. Our savior didn't even have a place to lay his head, but yet somehow we can justify spending thousands on chalices and vestments while the poor starve. Jesus must be smiling down... Thank God our church woke up and finally took notice!

Nov 10, 2008 - These "experts" were from protestant sects and the novus ordo is NOT the Mass in any way, shape or form. Anyone going to it is not in the Catholic Church. Stay home and say your prayers. That's why we were given the Act of Perfect Contrition and Spiritual Communion. God knew what would happen at Vatican II.

reneeemily Says:

Nov 10, 2008 - Yes it's true that they are not popes but "Brother" Diamond is not a Catholic.

yodasbro Says:

Nov 11, 2008 - I guess you've never read the Old Testament. Worth a look sometime. You might want to read the bits where God lays down the laws for how the temple ought to be adorned and the manner in which worship must take place therein. The temple was of course merely a precursor to Holy Mass which is infinitely more sacred.

sam52191 Says:

Nov 12, 2008 - Everyone please say a prayer. We as Catholics are now about to enter the martyrdom phase as prophesied by the Blessed Virgin Mary. God help us as we are going to be placed under attack.

jinkasima Says:

Nov 12, 2008 - Do you think the Church will ever go back to the TLM as Ordinary Form?

wavertree558 Says:

Nov 12, 2008 - Agreed. Let us Pray. What built us is being destroyed.

Nov 13, 2008 - this is 10 times as affective as valium! I'm so favoriting this!

Nov 18, 2008 - Or the Pope. As much as he seems to fancy himself one.

Nov 18, 2008 - CATHOLICS BROTHERS !! see this excellent video and share this on your blogs : watch?v=sUeeHIMZj58

reneeemily Says:

Nov 22, 2008 - No. Because VII made a new religon, all the "priests", "bishops", etc. are not really ordained in the Catholic Faith, therefore no one could bring back the True Mass or elect a true pope. We have to live as Catholics did during the Reformation and the French Revolution - stay at home and keep the Faith as best as we can. God provides for these times, even for marriage without a priest (between two Catholics) with Canon Law 1098. May He give us the grace of final perseverance!

reneeemily Says:

Nov 22, 2008 - How very true. He's so pathetic. Trying to lure those of us living our Faith at home to think he's bringing back the Latin Mass - its just the mass of Roncalli (John XXIII).

RockyBalboa211 Says:

Nov 22, 2008 - Well most of the people who elected benedict the 16th though were apart of religious life before vatican 2, therefore it would still be valid, yet maybe when benedict dies.. it could be like St. malachi predicted of him being the final pope.

reneeemily Says:

Nov 22, 2008 - Sorry but NO ONE has the authority to change the Mass in any way, shape or form. Pope Saint Pius Vs decree Quo Primum (1570) forbade in perpetuity any addition or changes whatsoever in the Roman Missal, (which is the Mass of All Times) under the penalty of incurring the wrath of Almighty God and the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul. Anyone who changes anything is automatically excommunicated. The truth is out there for anyone to find. I have several documents-email me if you're interested.

dontwanto Says:

Nov 23, 2008 - If you make an indictment of advanced capitalism--an economic never endorsed or blessed by Holy Mother Church--for leaving so many in hunger, no one will argue with you. However, this is not the forum for that. To say we are not justified in giving our first fruits to God and His Church is folly, as shown by Our Lord in St. Matthew, Ch. 26: after the woman poured ointment on Jesus' head, He said she did a good work because "the poor you have always with you." Pity the post-VII unlearned impiety.

dontwanto Says:

Nov 23, 2008 - For nwside.

TradCath123 Says:

Nov 23, 2008 - "The Reformation was a devastation of England which was at the time when this event took place, the Happiest country, perhaps, that the world had ever seen; but Afterwards marched on Plundering, Devastating, & inflicting torments on the people, shedding their innocent blood;" "Abbeys, priories, Nunneries, Hospitals & other religious foundations confiscated by the Reformers and Jews, who brought to England the misery of pauperism through Usury" -William Cobbett

gostav0 Says:

Nov 23, 2008 - yes you are right! no one has the authority to change the Liturgy but the Magisterium. the Tridentine Latin Mass was never abolished and was not replaced by the Ordinary Form of the Mass. Christ gave the Church authority and if the Church sees fit to have another form of the mass so be it as long as the essence of it is not changed. Let's pray for the Church and trust in our Lord. Let's not forget His promise that the gates of hell shall not prevail over His Church. +God bless!

gostav0 Says:

Nov 23, 2008 - To say that the Novus Ordo is not the Mass is ridiculous! Where is your trust reneeemily? I suggest you pray for the Church instead of saying stuff like this. That's why we have the Act of Perfect Contrition and Spiritual Communion. +God bless the Catholic Church!

dannyboy12357 Says:

Nov 23, 2008 - these people are crazy. since when does random repition equal divine insight? The bible has much to offer and yet these people speak it in latin!!! the normal people listiening have no idea what there even saying!!
