I think its based upon the Mozart opera "The Marriage of Figaro", where there is a pageboy called Cherubino who tries to have an affair with the Countess. Although in that opera, the role is not silent - its sung by either a woman (mezzo-soprano_ or preferably a man (countertenor, who has the same range as a mezzo-soprano).
