Dec 31, 2007 - The character of Toby is an 11-12 year old child. Not a 20 year old man. They had to have a man playing Toby on stage because there weren't any children that could sing the song properly, their voices were too weak.

Feb 1, 2008 - Sondheim wrote the character as a dim witted boy in his teens. The character is generally looked at as being roughly 12 years old. And honestly, it's true, most 12 year old boys would have troubles with this, because at that age, voices change. They wouldn't be able to hit the high notes as well as a fully grown man because their voices would probably crack.
